The Cribber in the Corner Stall: Understanding Horse Cribbing and What You Can Do About It
It's one of the most recognizable sounds in a barn — that low, rhythmic grunt against the top rail. If you have a cribber, you already know. Here's what's actually happening, why it starts, and how to manage it with your horse's wellbeing at the center.
Every barn has one. The horse in the corner stall who grips the door with his teeth, arches his neck, and lets out that telltale grunt. You learn to tune it out. Or you don't — and it sends you down a rabbit hole of forums, vet calls, and collars that may or may not help.
Cribbing is one of the most common and most misunderstood behaviors in the domestic horse. Here's what's actually happening, what the science says, and how to think about managing it in a way that puts your horse first.
Cribbing, Defined — and Distinguished from Wood Chewing
Cribbing — also called crib-biting or wind-sucking — is a stereotypy: a repetitive behavior with no obvious goal or function. The horse grasps a fixed surface with his upper incisors, contracts the muscles of the neck, and pulls back, generating negative pressure and producing that characteristic grunting sound. Despite what it looks like, horses don't actually swallow significant amounts of air during the act.
It's worth distinguishing cribbing from wood chewing, which is frequently confused with it. Dr. Katherine Houpt, VMD, PhD — professor emeritus in behavior medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and a founder of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists — puts it plainly: "Cribbing is when the horse grasps something with its teeth, arches its neck, and aspirates air. Wood chewing is when your wooden fences gradually disappear." They are not the same problem, and they don't call for the same response.

The honest answer is that science hasn't fully cracked it. What we do know is that cribbing is almost certainly multifactorial — a convergence of genetics, management, gut health, and stress response. No single cause has been definitively established, and multiple factors are likely at work in any individual horse.
Thoroughbreds are disproportionately represented among cribbers, with some studies suggesting they are more than three times as likely to develop the behavior compared to other breeds. Warmbloods also appear at elevated rates. Dr. Houpt recommends against breeding horses that crib, citing the heritable nature of the behavior. Research has pointed toward dopamine and GABA receptor genes as likely candidates, though a definitive genetic marker has not yet been identified.
Cribbing has never been observed in feral horses. It is a product of domestication — and specifically, of the way we keep horses. Dr. Sue McDonnell, PhD, founder of the equine behavior program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, notes that the rituals of modern horse management — confinement, limited grazing, restricted social contact — appear to play a central role. Extended stall time, abrupt weaning, and isolation from other horses are all strongly associated with cribbing onset.
Dr. Jéssica Carvalho Seabra, PhD, of the Federal University of Paraná and Colorado State University, completed a landmark 2021 systematic review of studies involving over 18,000 equids and found that prolonged or intense stress is the single most consistent factor across cribbing cases. Her findings are pointed: "A luxurious barn can still be a place of solitary confinement for a roaming, herd-living animal." Traditional weaning at six months, she notes, is a significant stressor for a species in which nursing naturally lasts far longer.
Diet is also a significant factor. A high-grain, low-forage diet increases stomach acidity, and some researchers believe cribbing functions as a self-administered buffer — the act stimulates saliva production, which helps neutralize gastric acid. Dr. Carissa Wickens, PhD, associate professor and extension equine specialist at the University of Florida, has investigated the role of ghrelin — a gut peptide that can enter the brain through the circulatory system — in cribbing behavior, suggesting that gut-brain signaling may be more central to this behavior than previously understood.
Research by Dr. S.D. McBride and A. Hemmings, published in Behavioural Brain Research, found that cribbing is associated with altered dopamine physiology in the brain's mesoaccumbens and nigro-striatal reward pathways. In plain terms: cribbing triggers a dopamine release that creates a neurological feedback loop similar to compulsive behavior in other species.
A 2015 study found that cribbers prevented from performing the behavior during a stress test showed significantly higher cortisol levels than those allowed to crib — suggesting the behavior genuinely functions as a stress-relief mechanism. Blocking it without addressing its root cause doesn't remove the stress. It removes the horse's way of coping with it.
The Real Risks — What Cribbing Actually Does to a Horse
Cribbing carries legitimate health consequences worth understanding clearly. The most serious is an elevated risk of colic — particularly epiploic foramen entrapment, a surgical emergency in which a portion of the small intestine becomes trapped in a small opening beneath the liver. Research published in the Equine Veterinary Journal by Dr. D.C. Archer and colleagues identified cribbing as a significant risk factor for this specific and life-threatening type of colic.
Gastric ulcers are also strongly associated with cribbing, though the relationship is bidirectional: ulcers may contribute to the onset of cribbing, and cribbing may in turn worsen gastric health. Over time, cribbers experience significant incisor wear, abnormal neck musculature, and an association with temporohyoid osteoarthropathy — a painful condition affecting structures of the jaw and middle ear. Cribbers also tend to be harder keepers: the behavior is energetically costly, and time spent cribbing is time not spent eating, moving, or socializing.
Management — What the Science Supports and What It Doesn't
Let's be direct: once cribbing is established, it is unlikely to be fully eliminated. The research is consistent on this point. The goal is reduction and welfare — not suppression at the cost of the horse's ability to cope.
Scope for ulcers first. Have your veterinarian perform a gastroscopy before anything else. If ulcers are present and treated, cribbing frequency often decreases meaningfully. This is frequently the most impactful single intervention and should precede any behavioral management strategy.
Maximize forage. Move toward ad libitum hay access if at all possible. Dr. Houpt's own recommended regimen includes unlimited hay alongside plain oats — reducing the palatability spike associated with sweet feed and grains that has been directly linked to increased cribbing. High-fiber, lower-NSC hay that requires more chewing time more closely mimics natural grazing behavior.
Increase turnout and social contact. Turnout with other horses, or at minimum within sight and physical reach of other horses over a fence line, significantly reduces stress and cribbing frequency. This is one of the clearest and most consistent findings in the literature. Social contact is not a luxury. For cribbers, it is medicine.
Enrich the stall environment. Slow feeders, hay nets, and enrichment toys extend foraging time and reduce boredom for horses that must be stalled. A 2016 study published in Veterinary Medicine International found that a specialized feed dispenser requiring horses to work for small amounts of feed significantly reduced cribbing behavior during mealtimes compared to conventional feeding.
Reconsider the cribbing collar carefully. Research by Dr. P. McGreevy and Dr. C. Nicol, published in Physiology & Behavior, found that horses prevented from cribbing for 24 hours rebounded to higher-than-baseline levels once the collar was removed — and showed signs of increased stress during the prevention period. If a collar is used, think of it as a management tool with real welfare trade-offs, not a solution.
What to avoid entirely. Aversion-based methods — shock, punishment, hog rings — are not recommended by the American Association of Equine Practitioners and can significantly worsen both stress and behavior. Isolation from other horses has no scientific support. Surgery exists as a last resort only.
A Note on Pre-Purchase and Disclosure
Cribbing is considered a vice under most pre-purchase examination standards and must be disclosed in a sale. It can affect insurability and boarding acceptance at some facilities. If you are considering a horse that cribs, weigh the management commitment honestly — not just the purchase price. Many cribbers live long, healthy, competitive careers with thoughtful, welfare-centered care. But they require an owner who is prepared to meet them where they are.
