The Gate Now Checks for Wounds

There is a new question at the stabling gate of some American shows this summer, and it is not about a Coggins or a health certificate. If your horse has shipped in from a state where New World screwworm has been confirmed, it will be looked over for wounds before it is allowed anywhere near the aisle. An open cut, a healing surgical site, an interference nick that never quite closed: any of them can hold up a horse at the entrance until an inspector has cleared it. For the first time in the working lives of nearly everyone now competing, biosecurity has moved from the cattle pages of the farm press to the in-gate of the hunter ring.

The occasion is a fly the United States spent decades congratulating itself on having beaten. On 3 June 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the country's first domestic case of New World screwworm in nearly sixty years, in a three-week-old beef calf in La Pryor, in Zavala County, Texas, roughly fifty miles from the Mexican border. The larvae were found in the animal's umbilical area. By early July the count had climbed past thirty confirmed cases, most of them in livestock and wildlife across the southern border region. As of this writing there is no confirmed equine case in the United States. That is the good news, and it is not the same as safety.

Why the parasite reads a wound as a door

Screwworm is not a nuisance fly. Its name is literal: the female lays her eggs at the edge of a wound, and the larvae that hatch burrow into living tissue and feed on it, enlarging the wound as they go and drawing in more flies. The larvae are visible to the naked eye, small and white; the earlier signs are a wound that will not heal, a foul discharge, a lesion that grows rather than shrinks. What makes the parasite a specifically equestrian problem, rather than a ranching one you can read about with detachment, is the kind of animal it prefers. It wants an open wound, and it wants a newborn's umbilicus. A show barn is not short of either. Sport horses live with a standing inventory of minor trauma: overreach cuts, brushing wounds, girth galls, the small surgical sites left by routine procedures, the scrape that comes off a shipping boot. The traveling horse, in other words, carries the exact thing the fly is looking for, and carries it across state lines by the thousand every week of the season.

What the gate now asks of you

US Equestrian issued formal guidance to horse owners and competition managers in late June, and it is more concrete than most people arriving at a show have registered. A horse shipping in from a state where screwworm has been confirmed must be examined for wounds on arrival, before it is permitted into the stabling area, and the exhibitor is told plainly that they may not enter stabling without that inspection. Competition management is instructed to have an appropriate inspector available; the burden is on the exhibitor to call ahead and make sure one will be there when the trailer pulls in. A horse that arrives with an untreated wound and no documentation of prior treatment must be treated on the spot by the competition veterinarian with an FDA-authorized screwworm product before it is released to the barn. This is not advisory language. It is a condition of entry.

The pharmacological piece arrived on 15 July, when the Food and Drug Administration issued its eleventh emergency use authorization of the outbreak, this one for an ivermectin oral solution for horses. It is worth reading the fine print, because it is easy to mistake for more than it is. The authorization is for short-term prevention only, given within twenty-four hours of birth or at the time of initial wound care; it is prescription-only; and it explicitly does not cover treatment of a wound already infested with larvae. It is a tool for the vulnerable moment, the fresh foal and the fresh wound, not a cure for an animal that already has the problem. The distinction matters at a show, where the relevant horse is the one that got a cut loading onto the trailer that morning, not the one with maggots visible from the aisle.

The eradication was never free

It is tempting to treat all of this as a temporary inconvenience, because the last time screwworm was a fact of American life it was made to disappear, and it stayed gone for two generations. The disappearance was not an accident of climate or luck. It was the product of one of the most elegant ideas in the history of applied biology, the sterile insect technique, developed by the USDA entomologists Edward F. Knipling and Raymond C. Bushland. Because the female screwworm mates only once, flooding an area with sterilized males means most matings produce no offspring, and the population folds in on itself. First proven in the field on the island of Curacao in 1954, the method drove screwworm out of the southeastern United States by the end of the decade, and by 1966 the country was declared free of the fly. The barrier was then pushed steadily south, held for decades at the Darien Gap by a joint United States and Panama commission that rears and sterilizes flies to this day.

That barrier is a shared, fragile piece of infrastructure, and it is under strain. The sterile insect technique has been a central program of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre in Vienna for more than sixty years, and the mathematics of the current outbreak are unsentimental. The commission's facility in Panama, the only plant now mass-rearing and sterilizing screwworm, produces on the order of a hundred million sterile flies a week. Bringing the northward push under control is estimated to require as many as six hundred million a week. The USDA has been releasing sterile flies over the affected Texas region and broke ground in April on a larger production facility at Moore Air Base near Edinburg, but that plant is not expected to reach its roughly three hundred million flies a week until 2027. The response is competent and it is also, at this moment, short of flies. The quiet sixty years the sport enjoyed were bought and maintained by people the average exhibitor has never heard of, and the bill for the next stretch is being written now.

The case that this is not your problem

There is a reasonable version of the shrug, and it deserves to be stated at full strength rather than waved away. No equine case has been confirmed in the United States. The cases that exist are overwhelmingly in cattle and wildlife, in a defined border region, inside quarantine zones the USDA is actively managing with a playbook that has worked before. The federal and international response is real, well-funded, and led by people who eradicated this fly once already. A horse owner in Virginia or Illinois is, on any honest reading of the map, at negligible personal risk today. To treat a wound check at a Texas showground as a national emergency for the sport is to mistake prudence for panic, and the equestrian world has a weakness for both.

The parasite does not travel on its own. It travels on animals that travel, and no animal in American agriculture travels quite like the sport horse.

All of that is true, and it is exactly why the shrug is the wrong posture. The reason to take this seriously is not the probability on any single day; it is the structure of the sport. The show circuit is a machine for moving horses through the precise geography where the fly now lives and out again to every corner of the country within days, wounds and all. A calf stays on its ranch. A hunter is in Ocala one week and back home the next, having passed through the states most exposed, sharing air and ground with animals from a dozen other barns. The economic exposure is not theoretical either: a single infested horse arriving at a show is not a private misfortune but a quarantine event, the kind that closes a stabling area and ends a week for everyone in it. That is the calculation the federation's inspection requirement is quietly making, and it is the right one. The cost of a wound check is a few minutes at the gate. The cost of skipping it, in the one case that matters, is measured in weeks.

The useful response is neither alarm nor indifference. It is the same discipline good horsemen already practice, now with a reason attached that did not exist a year ago: know the status of the states you are shipping from and to, keep wounds clean, closed, and documented, carry the paperwork that shows treatment, and call the competition office before you load rather than after you arrive. For sixty years the sport did not have to think about this fly, and that freedom was a gift from a program most riders could not name. The freedom has not ended, but it is no longer automatic. This season it asks something small of the people who travel, and the small thing is the whole point.
