The Heat Index Is a Suggestion

The Number Nobody Has to Obey

On the first Friday of July, Monmouth Park called off its entire card. So did Horseshoe Indianapolis the day before, with the heat index forecast near 110 degrees. Ellis Park in Henderson, Kentucky, moved its Friday program to the following Thursday rather than run horses through a projected 107. Colonial Downs scratched its Fourth of July racing outright. Four tracks, four separate managements, one decision made four times over: when the heat crosses a line, the sport stops. Nobody asks the trainer to use judgment.

The hunter/jumper circuit, running the same weeks under the same sky, works differently. US Equestrian has a heat index guide — a real one, with numbers, built by Dr. Katie Flynn, the federation's senior staff veterinarian for equine health and biosecurity. Below a combined temperature-and-humidity reading of 130, competition is considered safe. Between 130 and 150, competitors are told to begin watching for heat stress. From 150 to 180, the watching becomes critical. Above 180, US Equestrian "encourages" alternative competition times — mornings, evenings, a rescheduled class list. What it does not do, anywhere in that document, is require anything. There is no rule that says a show must stop. The decision, at every threshold, belongs to the exhibitor standing in the ring.

That distinction is the whole subject of this piece. Not whether USEF's numbers are wrong — they broadly track the science. Whether it is reasonable to leave the stopping decision to the person least equipped, structurally, to make it.

What a Horse Actually Needs From Heat

Start with the physiology, because the case for a hard rule is built on it, not on sentiment. A healthy horse holds its core temperature between 37.5 and 38.5 degrees Celsius inside a thermoneutral zone of roughly 5 to 25 degrees — comfortable weather, in other words, by most riders' standards. Outside that zone, under exercise, the horse is generating far more heat than it can pass off through the air alone. That is why it sweats so hard: a 2023 literature review by researchers at the University of Queensland's School of Veterinary Science, published in the International Journal of Biometeorology, puts the equine sweat rate at close to three times that of a human doing comparable work, with fluid losses measured on exercising horses running 20 to 55 milliliters per square meter of body surface per minute — six to fifteen liters an hour. A horse in a hot jumper class is not perspiring the way its rider is. It is bleeding water and electrolytes at a rate most owners underestimate.

The harder finding is about time, not volume. Horses can acclimate to heat — but not on a show's schedule. In a controlled trial run by the physiologist David Marlin and colleagues at the UK's Animal Health Trust, horses exercised daily in 30-degree, 80-percent-humidity conditions for 21 consecutive days before their sweating response meaningfully changed: sweat rate during exercise itself was no different at day 21 than day zero, but recovery sweat rate had dropped by roughly 17 percent and sweat sodium concentration by about 10 percent, evidence of a body slowly learning to conserve what it loses. Three weeks. Not three days on the grounds, not a single hot Saturday class. A horse vanned in from a cooler barn and asked to jump a week-long summer show is, physiologically, exactly as unacclimated on day one as it will be on day five.

That is the piece USEF's guidance does not account for. Monitoring for "signs of heat stress" assumes the horse has some baseline tolerance to fall back from. The research says most competition horses arriving at a July show do not.

Reading the Number Before You Enter

Below 130 — Combined temperature and humidity considered safe for competition.
130 to 150 — Begin monitoring horses for early signs of heat stress.
150 to 180 — Critical monitoring; consider schedule adjustments.
Above 180 — USEF recommends rescheduling or canceling the day's classes.
None of these thresholds is mandatory. The rulebook leaves the call to exhibitors and management.

Why "Monitor" Falls on the Wrong Person

Racing's blanket cancellations work because the decision sits with track management — a single entity, financially exposed but not emotionally invested in any one horse's start, that can pull an entire card without negotiating with two hundred individual trainers. The hunter/jumper model diffuses that decision down to the amateur owner who paid an entry fee, hauled four hours, and has a trainer waiting on a tight schedule of rings. Ask that owner to be the one who decides her horse should scratch at a heat index of 165, and you are asking her to absorb a sunk cost against a threshold she has no training to judge. Professional strings with a veterinarian on site scratch. The lesson-string amateur on a Thursday card, checking a phone weather app between trot sets, is exactly the rider the guidance was least built for.

The counterargument deserves its due: a single hard number cannot fairly govern a covered arena in Ocala and an open grass field in Vermont, or a humid Carolina afternoon against a dry Colorado one. Show management has sunk costs of its own — footing, vendors, a prize list already printed — that a mandatory stop late in a heat wave would not spare. USEF's discretion-based model is, on its face, an attempt to respect that variation rather than flatten it.

That argument does not survive contact with the top of the scale, though. Local variation is a real case for flexibility between 130 and 180. It is not a case against a floor above 180 — a reading at which, on USEF's own numbers, competition should stop rather than merely be reconsidered. Racing did not need a covered-arena exception this week to cancel at triple digits. There is no principled reason the hunter ring does.

What Riders Can Control While the Rule Doesn't

Until that threshold becomes a rule rather than a recommendation, the discipline of watching the number falls to the barn. A few findings are worth knowing precisely, because the marketing around electrolyte products often outruns the research behind them. Kentucky Equine Research's applied nutrition trials have found that adding dextrose to an electrolyte mix does not increase the rate at which a horse absorbs or retains those electrolytes — it improves palatability, at the cost of diluting the actual electrolyte content per scoop. A supplement chosen for its sweetness is, by that finding, often the wrong one for the job it is being asked to do.

The horse's cooling system is not optional equipment; it is the entire margin between a hot round and a metabolic emergency. Riders are not exempt from that math either — a rider dehydrated and overheated in show clothes makes worse decisions in the irons than a comfortable one, which is reason enough to treat off-horse conditioning as part of summer preparation rather than an afterthought reserved for winter.

None of this is a case against summer showing. It is a case for treating the number USEF already publishes as what the physiology says it should be: not a suggestion to watch the sky more carefully, but a line past which the sport, like racing did this week, simply stops.
